Scholarships

Note: These funding opportunities are not loans. Awarded money will not need to be paid back and there are no application fees for any of these opportunities.

Program

Editor-in-Chief Honorarium

  • The honorarium, in the amount of $250, is awarded to the incoming editor-in-chief for Jelly Bucket. Applicants must be BGWS students in good standing who have served as staff on at least one issue.
  • Deadline: August 1.

BGWS Emerging Writer Awards

  • Honorariums in the amount of $250 each are awarded in the categories of creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. Winners, who are required to give a reading at the domestic summer residency, are determined by outside judges. All BGWS students are eligible.
  • Deadline: February 1.

Travel

Bonnie Plummer Endowed Study Abroad Scholarship

  • This scholarship is awarded annually to one English major or graduate student and provides financial support for tuition, room, and/or board to a student attending EKU while studying outside of the United States in a University-approved program for study abroad classroom credit (ENW 801-001, the international residency in Lisbon). Recent winners have received around $500.

EKU Abroad Travel Grant

  • This is a non-competitive grant and all students who are traveling to the international residency for the first time are guaranteed funding as long as they meet the application deadline. Students must be enrolled in ENW 801-001 at the time they apply. The amount of the grant varies from year to year depending upon total enrollment for all EKU study abroad programs. Recent amounts have ranged from $420-$1,500.

General

EKU Retirees Association Scholarship

  • The EKU Retirees Association awards one or more scholarships every year in varying amounts. All applicants for the EKU Retirees Association have to fill out the Scholarship Application Form through EKU Direct. When filling out the application students should indicate that they are applying for the EKURA Scholarship and should also indicate if they have a relative who has retired from EKU at some point. At least three letters of recommendation from professors, employers, etc, and a letter/essay from the student introducing themselves and their financial need is required.  Applicants should have a 3.0 GPA, be otherwise in good standing with the University, and may be enrolled in any  degree program. Students need not have a relative who has retired from EKU.

Laura D. Kennamer Scholarship in the Social and Behavioral Sciences

  • The Laura D. Kennamer Endowed Scholarship Fund, established by the late Laura D. Kennamer, aids and fosters the educational experience of students attending Eastern Kentucky University who are majoring in programs in the areas of Social and Behavioral Sciences (this includes MFA students). Multiple awards may be given each year, and amounts vary depending on need, as demonstrated on the application. Typical awards have been $1,000 – $10,000, but could be higher. Students may apply to use funds for Education Abroad, EKU tuition/fees, and other expenses related to continuing their education at EKU.

Layne-Wood Endowed Scholarship

  • The Layne-Wood Endowed Scholarship Fund established by Robert G. Wood and Judy M. Layne-Wood provides assistance to students from Kentucky. Any academic major with a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA (college or high school) is eligible. Community and co-curricular involvement considered. One award given each year. The award amount depends on market value of fund; recent awards have been $500 – $800.

O’Donnell Scholarship

  • Kentucky Residents 65+ years of age qualify for these non-competitive scholarships. O’Donnell Scholar receive full tuition and fee remission.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate Assistant (GA) – Noel Studio for Academic Creativity

  • Multiple Graduate Assistant positions are available on a competitive basis. Though no GA positions are guaranteed for MFA students, Noel Studio typically awards 1-2 GA positions to MFA students annually. GAs serve as consultants in the studio for undergraduates, analyzing assignments; facilitating brainstorming, planning, and drafting; providing feedback on structure and content; and modeling strategies for revision. The assistantship comes with tuition remission and a stipend. Gas must be present on the EKU campus in Richmond several times per week.
